LECTURE GUIDE IN SOC 6 WEEK 1ââ¬âORIENTATION / INTRODUCTION TO RIZAL COURSE WEEK 2 BACKGROUNDER OF RIZALââ¬â¢S FAMILY / HISTORICAL BACGROUND OF RIZAL: A. ANCESTRY OF RIZAL. Rizal came from a mixture of races. From his father side, his great grandfather was a Chinese merchant from Amoy, China. In the closing year of the 17th century, Domingo Lamco who assumed the family surname ââ¬Å" Mercado ââ¬Å" in consonance with the decree of Governor General Narciso Claveria to free all Spanish subjects and their children from prejudices associated with having Chinese surnames. Lamco married a wealthy Chinese mestiza, Ines dela Rosa and from Manila, they moved to Binan and became tenants in the Dominican hacienda which those time large portion of the townâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦6. Maria Cruz Y Mercado (Biang) was married to Daniel Faustino Cruz of Binan Laguna. She was born in 1859 and died in 1945. 7. Jose Protacio Mercado Rizal Y Alonzo Realonda (Pepe / Moy) is the 7th child of Don Kikoy and Dona Lolay. Was married to Josephine Bracken, he had a son by her but this baby boy died a few hours after birth. Rizal named hi ââ¬Å"Franciscoââ¬Å"after his father and buried him in Dapitan. 8. Concepcion Mercado Y Alonzo (Concha) born in 1862; she died of sickness at the age of 3 ; her death was Rizalââ¬â¢s first sorrow in life. 9. Josefa Mercado Y Alonzo (Panggoy) was an epileptic born in 1865 but with a strong personality who died as a spinster at the age of 80. 10. Trinidad Mercado Y Alonzo (Trining) was the one who inherited Rizalââ¬â¢s properties in Tayuman. Born in 1868, she died also as a spinster in 1951, at the age of 83. 11. Soledad Quintero Y Mercado (Choleng) was the youngest children of don Kikoy and Dona Lolay. Born in 1870, she was the reason why Dona Lolay was freed from imprisonment. She was married to Pantaleon Quintero and died in 1929. The Rizal family had a simple, contented, and a happy life.
